CoRIS is a scientific research platform that follows over 20.000 people living with HIV (PLWH) in Spain. Furthermore, it works together with HIV BioBank, the establishment that stores blood and plasma samples from participants in the cohort study.
Cohort participation is voluntary and altruistic. Participants provide CoRIS with clinical and epidemiological information, as well as biological samples, which are stored at HIV BioBank.
The information supplied by participants allows us to describe the current HIV situation in Spain, study the disease progression and mortality, and its main determinants, explain patterns and measure the effectiveness of antiretroviral treatment (ART) among PLWH in Spain.
CoRIS cohort comprises a coordination unit (CoRIS Coordination Unit), an expert decision-making committee (Executive Committee) and hospitals and health centres that collect data and biological samples from participants (Clinical Research Centres).
CoRIS Coordination Unit coordinates the cohort. Dr. Inma Jarrín, Scientific Researcher in the Public Research Organisations manages this unit, whose headquarters is at the National Centre of Epidemiology (Carlos III Health Institute, Ministry of Science and Innovation).
Our core function is to coordinate data collection. We lend support to centres participating in the cohort study by sending them data and biological samples from CoRIS participants. Our ultimate goal is to compile a database that contains all available data, and facilitates access to associated biological samples. Furthermore, this database is shared with different international collaborations where CoRIS is a participant.
Moreover, our Unit processes applications from researchers who are interested in conducting research projects with CoRIS data and HIV BioBank samples.
We have implemented the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System in our cohort to ensure that our database update and transfer of data and samples procedures abide by this standard.
Clinical Research Centres are hospitals and health centres that collect information and biological samples from individuals participating in CoRIS. Currently, 51 centres in 15 autonomous regions cooperate with CoRIS. They play a crucial role, as a scientific structure of this magnitude would not be possible without their contribution.

CoRIS Executive Committee is the cohort decision-making body, which ensures that its scientific targets are met.
The Executive Committee comprises CoRIS clinical and epidemiological coordinators, the HIV BioBank coordinator, representatives of CoRIS participating centres, and CoRISpe coordinators (Cohort of the Spanish Paediatric HIV Network).
